Deepavali

Another holiday, Deepavali,  is fast approaching and this means that we have a day off on Monday. Deepavali is a one day festival of lights for the Hindu population.

I have learned a little about this time of year and invite you to learn more here at http://allmalaysia.info/msiaknow/festivals/deepavali.asp.

The most charming thing about Deepavali, in my opinion, is that people decorate their front hallways with rice pictures called kolams. A kolam is a form of sandpainting using colored rice. The nicest part of this is that kolams are not only impressively beautiful, they are said to invite birds and other small critters to eat it, thus inviting other beings into one’s home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence. We will be visiting some sites this weekend with kolams and will share what we find.
